The Center of it All

What is at the center? That is kind of a vague question now isn't it? If it is the center of the earth, then we know that it is molten rock (I believe I am remember that correctly); if it is the center of donut, we know that it is nothing; if it is the center of an Oreo or a Twinkie, we aren't really sure, but it is delicious.

But what about the church, what is at the center of the church? Well, the answer should be obvious; Christ. The church is the people of God, called, gathered and enlightened by the Holy Spirit. Christ brings us to himself, forgives us, makes us his own. The church gathers around word and sacrament as those are the marks of the church. But that is not all the church does. that gathering part can only be part of the story. It is a means to an end. Because the reason why the church gathers is so that it can go and be about the work that God has set before that church to do. Jesus told his disciples to go and make disciples of all nations baptizing them and teaching them. He did not say to sit around and sing songs and read books, and those who want to come find you will find you. Otherwise stay where you are.

That is ridiculous, and yet it is a mindset that is all too prevalent in the life of God's people. I wonder if that comes from allowing ourselves to be motivated by fear. How easy is it for us to not try something new because we are afraid of what might come? Do you, dear reader, want to go sky diving with me? Me neither. why? fear. Do you want to go run with the bulls? Ne neither. Why? pain.

And yet, it is all ludicrous. We have not been given a spirit of fear but a Spirit that makes of children of God, by which we call out, "Abba! Father!" So if that is the case why are we afraid, as the people of God, to take risks and ventures that would allow us to be about the mission that God has given us to do?

Believe me, I wish I had the answers. But consider this. We have a God who is not only in control of everything, but he is also with us always. He gives us the strength that we need to accomplish the tasks that are set before us. So that when we do face those scary moments. We can face them with confidence.

I pray that God's control and presence are a source of strength for you today and always.
